The Project

Advancing Racial Equity in Financial Systems: Walmart’s Center for Racial Equity

Walmart engaged Higher Heights Consulting & Training to conduct a landscape analysis of philanthropic interventions addressing racial equity in financial systems. The goal was to identify effective nonprofit models, highlight gaps, and recommend investment opportunities to help reduce the racial wealth gap.

The Approach

• Researched philanthropic initiatives focused on financial inclusion and equity.

• Interviewed funders and stakeholders to capture insights and promising practices.

• Analyzed gaps in the field and aligned findings with Walmart’s strengths.

• Developed recommendations to support systemic change and community-led solutions.

The Results

HHCT’s analysis informed Walmart.org’s launch of a Request for Proposal (RFP) to support Black entrepreneurs. The recommendations guided Walmart in investing approximately $5 million to address the root causes of racial disparities in the nation’s criminal justice, education/workforce, financial, and healthcare systems.
