RESEARCH & ECOSYSTEM MAPPING
Using research and community insight to shape a philantropic strategy
The Project
Vanguard Financial Access Strategy
Vanguard set out to design a philanthropic strategy to enhance financial well-being in low-income communities by expanding access to financial education, capability, and inclusion. I was engaged to provide research and ecosystem mapping support, ensuring the strategy reflected best practices and community realities in Charlotte, Dallas, Greater Philadelphia, and Greater Phoenix.
The Approach
Conducted a literature review to identify proven interventions, gaps, and opportunities for philanthropy.
Supported refinement of Vanguard’s Theory of Change by mapping activities to outcomes and recommending metrics.
Led ecosystem scans and interviews with local funders and nonprofits to identify community assets and unmet needs.
Developed recommendations that build on Vanguard’s unique strengths and provide added value to help strengthen grassroots organizations..
The Results
The work produced actionable recommendations rooted in both research and local insight. The scans revealed gaps in financial service access and highlighted opportunities for philanthropy to accelerate progress. By combining evidence with lived experience, Vanguard developed a strategy to help families move from financial insecurity to long-term wealth-building.
