Strengthening philanthropic strategies to advance financial coaching
The Project
Strengthening Philanthropic Strategy through Financial Coaching
The Asset Funders Network (AFN) brings together philanthropic leaders to advance economic opportunity for low- and moderate-income people. In 2016, AFN established the Financial Coaching Working Group in response to growing demand from funders for collaborative strategies to expand the field of financial coaching. I was engaged to help position AFN as a leader in advancing coaching as a core strategy to improve financial capability and security.
The Approach
Partnered with a committee of funders to align investment strategies with research and evidence-based practices.
Facilitated collaboration and co-investment across funders, amplifying impact beyond individual grants.
Co-led the development of the Financial Coaching Census in partnership with the national dataset on financial coaching practice and outcomes.
Designed and delivered funder education through convenings, briefs, and webinars on topics such as outcome measurement, best practices in training, and emerging intersections with fintech and the workplace.
The Results
AFN became recognized as the national leader in financial coaching, influencing how funders invest in the field. The Financial Coaching Census—published in 2015, 2017, and 2019—established baseline data, identified trends, and provided funders and practitioners with critical insights for shaping effective strategies. Participation in the Working Group more than doubled, reflecting AFN’s expanded reach and influence. By strengthening its philanthropic strategy, AFN helped grow financial coaching from concept to reality—supporting organizations, funders, and communities in building lasting financial security.
